bob's ultima site home | links | contact me the build (2003/4): june | july | august | september | october | november | december | january updates: 2004 | le mans | sold | new project gt3 | becker trafficpro install if you're looking for the ultima sports ltd website click here . this site has no affiliation to the ultima factory, and is just one builder's account of how he put his own supercar together. why an ultima? last autumn i built my first car, a westfield megablade . 420 kilos, 140 bhp of honda fireblade power. the initial motivation was as a track car, and it's been brilliant. i really enjoyed the build, and even before i'd finished was turning my thoughts towards building another car. during the build i came across a couple of ultima build sites, and the pistonheads ultima forum. i visited the autosport show in january and saw one in the flesh. very impressive, and obviously a totally different beast from the megablade. i also had a look at westfield's xtr2, an open le mans prototype style car with a mid engined layout using a 1300cc suzuki haybusa engine. i visited the ultima factory late in january and had a good look round and had a chat with ted marlow. ted also took me out for a ride in their factory demonstrator - hugely impressive. bags of v8 grunt, bags of stopping power from the ap brakes and fabulous handling. the acceleration and braking were much as expected really, my megablade and evo vii are both fast cars though, and although this is considerably quicker it wasn't the speed that impressed so much as the handling. the car was totally planted, but with extremely good ride quality. it's softer than the evo but none of the 'crashiness' of the megablade. over the next few months i did a lot of thinking, and a bit more research. also a bit of negotiating planning permission with my long suffering wife. i think she already knew i was going to build another car some time, it was just a matter of what and when. she agreed so long as i left it till after my next triathlon, ironman austria on july 6th. i knew as well as she did that if i had a new toy calling me out to the garage all the time i wouldn't get the volume of training required in, and that wouldn't be a good thing! i decided on the ultima for two main reasons. firstly it would be a car i could use for some of my business trips away, and secondly although it would cost more to build i figured it would probably retain more value than an xtr2. so just before going on holiday to florida in april i rang the factory and ordered my kit. there are loads of options and since the first delivery is free i wanted to get as much as i could in the first batch. i ended up ordering enough of the modules to take me up to a rolling chassis less the wheels and suspension. i left the wheels off mainly because of the cost, i won't need them till i'm ready to fit the body. the suspension was partly down to cost, but i also still haven't made my mind up whether to have the more expensive (but valved specifically for the ultima) intrax shocks or avo's. avo's certainly have a good reputation, but i suspect i'll end up shelling out the extra few hundred quid ... click here to view the specs so far. in may chris (my youngest son) and i drove up to stoneleigh for the national kit car show. i was keen to have a general look around of course, but my main goal was to have another look round the ultimas. they had 6 cars there, including a nice silver one which appeared to be their current demonstrator, at least that was the one they were letting folks have a sit in. i had a chat with richard marlow, mainly about seat positioning and leg room. i had a sit in the silver one which has the lowered floor pan and was really pleased. head room seems no problem, ditto accessing the pedals was comfortable and there was a couple of inches clearance below the steering wheel for my knees. it was nice to sit in one of the cars again, the cockpit is fantastic and the seats feel really comfortable. chris checked out the passenger seat and loved it. i have to say i prefer the white ultima dials to a stack dash, i'm not tempted to spend the extra �1,000 or so on the stack. had a good browse round the many tool stands there too and bought a few handiclamps ready for the build. home | links | contact me the build (2003/4): june | july | august | september | october | november | december | january updates: 2004 | le mans | sold | new project gt3 | becker trafficpro install visits: 113629
